Discs, Muscles, Joints, Ligaments, Nerves
Aging, posture and high or sustained load all cause tissue stress in the spine. With a neck problem you may complain of pain or disturbance in sensation or strength in your neck, shoulder, mid-back, arm or head. Similarly, a back problem may cause pain, numbness or weakness in the back, groin, hip or leg. These symptoms may be caused by:
- Discs
- Muscles
- Joints
- Ligaments
- Nerves
There are also certain syndromes associated with neck and back pain.
We start with a detailed assessment which includes taking a history from you and making a physical examination to test structures, in order to form a diagnosis. We will explain assessment and diagnosis as we go along, and will discuss a treatment and management plan with you.
Treatment techniques that we use may include
- Manual techniques: joint mobilisation, tissue release, stretching, trigger point release, muscle activation
- Posture correction
- Electrotherapy
- Biomechanical assessment and prescription of orthotics (custom insoles)
- Advice re supports, activity, ergonomics and prevention of recurrence
- Exercise prescribed for the individual, to stretch tight structures and strengthen weak ones
Your Physiotherapist will monitor symptoms and signs, and will progress treatment accordingly. If appropriate, we will liaise with your doctor, consultant or other healthcare professional.
